Green Village Home & Garden on Lewisville Road in Moncton will host its annual wine and cheese event today and tomorrow in Moncton in support of the Mobile One Soup Kitchen.

A similar event will be held at the Green Village in Fredericton.

The events showcase the store's line of products for the Christmas season, along with the ornate decorating.

"The holiday season is an important time of year to give back to the community and to give to those less fortunate and we are expecting a great turnout this year," says Green Village owner Andy Buyting. "The Fredericton Food Bank and Moncton's Mobile One Soup Kitchen are wonderful organizations, and we ask that all guests bring either a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation to the event."

Buyting says the staff work hard to get the stores looking like Christmas wonderlands.

Coinciding the event is the launch of Green Village's holiday issue of Green Village Home & Garden Magazine.

Average home prices rise

The number of commercial and industrial properties sold in New Brunswick in September 2009 declined compared to the same month last year, but the average residential price set a new record, according to the latest report from the New Brunswick Real Estate Board.

According to statistics provided by real estate boards in New Brunswick, the average price for multiple listing service (MLS) home sales in September 2009 was $151,728.

This is an increase of seven per cent from year-ago levels, and represents the highest average price for the month of September on record. By comparison, the national average price rose 14 per cent year-over-year to $331,602 to reach the highest average price on record.

Saint John and Moncton posted the largest increases in average price, climbing 11 per cent and 10 per cent year-over-year respectively.

The average price in Moncton was $149,907. In Fredericton it was $140,681, while Saint John was $176,997

"The higher prices but fewer sales is the result of a declining inventory of existing housing for sale in the province," said Dwayne Hayes, president of the New Brunswick Real Estate Association.

The New Brunswick Real Estate Association represents over 1,000 agents, salespeople and affiliate members throughout the province.

Graphic design students show their work

Students from the Multimedia Graphic Design and Development course at CompuCollege will show their final portfolios and meet with prospective employers during a show this Friday, Nov. 6 at the Coastal Inn in Dieppe.

"It's a one-day show that they work all year to put together," says instructor Rachel Storr. "It gives the students a chance to meet with potential employers, network with community members and really show everyone what graphic design is all about."

Invitations have been sent out to all the major design firms in Metro Moncton and students also take time to hand deliver some to those companies they would really like to see attend.

But the event is open to anyone who is curious about design or wants to see what the CompuCollege program is all about.

The show will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Coastal Inn Champlain, located at 502 Kennedy St.
