Growing Metro operation opens larger showroom and warehouse
Allsco Building Products will celebrate the opening of the largest vinyl window, door and siding superstore in Atlantic Canada at a reception in the new St. George Boulevard facility tomorrow.
"It's long overdue," said Gordon Lahanky, president of Allsco. "For us, there's a lot of enhancements there. Clearly, offering a greater selection of product and the service level of having everything under one roof. The showroom is quadruple the size of what we had, so it allows for consumers to really get a feel for the vastness of our offering."
The new 75,000-square-foot warehouse, showroom and office complex, formerly home to Chrysler, will act as the distribution centre for Allsco products in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. It puts the company's distribution and sales activities all in one place, as they previously had several retail outlets spread out across the city.
"This was a chance to consolidate our siding division under one roof and certainly enhance our sales offices as well as showroom facilities," Lahanky said. "The business is currently growing and expanding. It was a fair undertaking for us, but it was perfect timing to do so."
Allsco bought the Chrysler location in November 2008 and has since been renovating the site to prepare it for its new role.
Approximately 30 employees will work in the building; the company's accounting and production activities will remain at its facility on Rideout Street.
Lahanky said the St. George location offers advantages to the company and its customers, but should also provide a boost for an area in the city that has felt the effects of the decline in automotive production. "It's nice to see that end of town is getting a rebirth and a fresh start, as opposed to looking at those buildings being dormant or vacant," he said. "It's been an end of town that has had a very strong presence from the auto industry and we're trying to do our part to keep it fresh and vibrant.
"This was an investment, not only into Greater Moncton, but for the long haul of Allsco's presence in Greater Moncton."
Efficiency NB recently recognized Allsco for its energy-efficient products and activities.
"At a time when heating costs are at a premium and people are being so conscious about being green, we as a company have shown that we're doing many things that are energy efficient," Lahanky said. "It wasn't any one item, it was the culmination of many things."
