No hotel objections
No objections were heard against a zoning bylaw amendment that would allow a motel to be built on a vacant Eveleigh Street lot behind Norrad Chrysler in Sussex.
Choice Hotels made the application to change the land from Industrial Light Zone to Industrial Light Zone permitting a motel with terms and conditions.
Sussex council gave the request first and second reading in March and forwarded it to the Planning Advisory Committee for comment.
It is expected to receive third reading by council soon, but whether that happens before or after the May 12 municipal election is unknown.

Family funeral business has new family
After more than 50 years of service to the communities of Petitcodiac, Salisbury, Havelock and Elgin, the Armstrong family is leaving the funeral service profession.
Third generation funeral director Paula Armstrong announced that Armstrong’s Funeral Home has been sold to a new firm formed by two funeral directors who both have roots in the region.
Terry Rogers, a Salisbury native, along with Mitchell Long of Sussex, the managing director of Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, have entered a partnership, creating a firm that will own both Armstrong’s and Sussex Select.
As of late April, Terry Rogers becomes Armstrong’s new managing director. Long will continue to manage Sussex Select. Tina Rogers, Terry’s wife and a Petitcodiac native will also be active in the business.
Armstrong’s father, Gary S. Armstrong, served the community as a funeral director for more than three decades prior to his unexpected death last May.

Fundy Civic Centre plans ready
The Fundy Civic Centre has taken the next step towards the new indoor pool in Sussex, releasing the site and floor plans for the aquatic and fitness facility.
Plans, as previously promised, include a six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a therapy pool, fitness facility and indoor walking track. The facility will be located just off Main Street beside the Gateway Towers apartments. The schematic design was developed by Soucy/ Ellis Architects Ltd.
The federal and provincial governments have each pledged $1.33 million in support of the project through the Canada- New Brunswick Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.
NB’s Regional Development Corporation has also offered an additional grant of $300,000.
Excitement is building and the fundraising committee is working hard to put their campaign together to raise the remaining funds required to build the project.
The Town of Sussex has pledged $500,000 but a final cost on the entire project and fundraising target have not been made public, but will be in the coming weeks.

Grass fires are highpriced student amusement
On sunny weekdays in April and May, firefighters know it’s not a matter of if, but when that day’s grass fire call will come.
Fire calls to the woods and walking trail behind Sussex Regional High School are getting to be a lunch-hour and afterschool routine. Volunteer fire fighters were called there an unheard of four times in one day recently.
“We usually have eight or 10 calls [to the school] throughout the spring, but I don’t think we’ve ever been up there four times in one day before,” said Sussex fire chief Bill Wanamaker.
The fire chief said it costs “at least $500” for the Sussex Fire Department to take a fire truck and crew out each time, and it’s frustrating to crews to be called again and again to unnecessary, deliberately-set grass fires. Resources were stretched to the limit that day when another fire call came in from nearby Knightville.

Plans for new subdivisions approved
At a recent Hampton Council meeting, the town approved the tentative plans for Executive Estates, off Donlea Drive, and the Links at Hampton Golf Club. Phase two of the Pleasant View Estates, behind Save-Easy, was also approved.
Council also approved land for a public purpose and cash in lieu of land from Executive Estates and the Links as part of agreements with developers.
The money and land will be used for recreation or leisure projects.
