Mayor’s message re: Miramichi optimistic

During his recent State of the City address, Mayor John McKay said many new initiatives are on the way for Miramichi, including a new transit system, a solid-waste recycling program, the city’s wellness initiative, a renewed focus on tourism, wind energy, the new pellet plant, a renewed push for access to natural gas in the north of the province, and improvements to Route 108.

Crown land allocations must stay: council

Council recently passed a resolution asking the N.B. government to ensure Crown wood allocations in the Miramichi remain in the area. Mayor John McKay said he is concerned wood used by now-closed mills could be transferred to operations outside the region.

“It is much less likely to find a buyer [for a closed mill] if the allocation is not available,” McKay said.

International performer to open Folksong Fest

Internationally known Canadian folk-singer Buffy Sainte-Marie has been booked to open the 51st Miramichi Folksong Festival on August 4.

Tickets are on sale for $25 at Book’s Inn and Bill’s Kwik Way in Miramichi and the Stitching Post in Bathurst.

They can also be ordered by calling 622-1780, or via e-mail to bb2@nb.sympatico.ca. If still available, tickets will cost $30 at the door.

Chamber could lead action in city: president

New Miramichi Chamber of Commerce president Dorothy Innes, of the Atcon Group, says the chamber could be a conduit for action through its component businesses and the people in them. “We want things to happen, and the reason we want that is because most of us choose to be here,” she said. “It’s our Miramichi and we want it to be the best it can be.”

Miramichi businessmen among 15 selected

Gene Fowler of Fatkat Animation Studios, Gordie Lavoie of Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc. and Ryan Smith of Chatham Biotec Ltd. are three Miramichi entrepreneurs among 15 New Brunswick business people selected to participate in the Wallace McCain Institute’s Cohort Program. “It was not an easy decision,” said Nancy Mathis, executive director of the Wallace McCain Institute for Business Leadership at the University of New Brunswick.

ATV Club accepted into N.B. federation

The Miramichi Off-Road ATV Club Inc. has been accepted into the New Brunswick All-Terrain Vehicle Federation.

The non-profit club has developed a trail network and says its goal is to provide a system for hikers, bikers, skiers, snowshoers and ATVers to enjoy as part of a province-wide system. ATV sales have been climbing steadily in Miramichi, and in New Brunswick.

Community involvement key to future of Miramichi

A Active community involvement is important for the Miramichi to get through tough economic times, says Rogersville businessman Patrick Finnigan, chair of the Miramichi Community Action Committee.

Finnigan said there will be business leaders who lead the way in the future, but it is the people on the river who will ultimately help the area prosper — and there are great leaders on the river.

NBCC head in favour of bilingual initiatives

New Brunswick Community College Miramichi campus principal Marie- Paule Theriault say she is very much in support of initiatives introduced by Avantage Miramichi Advantage (AMA), a group of regional representatives interested in promoting bilingual services in the work force.

City councilor Rene Smith agrees, saying, “Our vision and our mandate is to offer bilingual service to tourists and others in our area.”
