Establishing new retail businesses is one key to bringing jobs to Bathurst, according to some of the city councillors reoffering in the May 12 municipal election.

“One of the things we have been looking at is seeking...different retail companies which would move to the Bathurst area,” said deputy mayor Scott Ferguson. “We’ve been actively pursuing them and we developed a plan with the help of the provincial government to develop a brochure which is going to be sent out to possible retail outlets and restaurants and things like that.”

Councillor Hugh Comeau said the city has done a good job in recent years of attracting new retail business such as Wal-Mart and expanding others, such as Pharmacie Jean Coutu.

He said the waterfront development project in downtown Bathurst and developing St. Anne Street are good places to start building for the future.

“Going towards the future, I’m still looking at developing the waterfront and I feel there’s a lot of little kiosks that can be made all along that waterfront,” he concluded.
