Atlantic region facing demographic challenges
The twin demographic challenges of an aging population and slow workforce growth will affect Canada's Atlantic provinces more than other regions of the country, according to a C.D. Howe Institute report released Thursday. Years of low birth rates and youth outmigration mean the East Coast faces diminished workforce growth and a fiscal squeeze as fewer taxpayers support a growing bill for public programs, the report said. The think-tank said addressing migration, education and skills training, investment and fiscal programs - taken together - can help Atlantic Canada prosper in the years ahead.
