Giant Tiger eyes location

A Canadian-owned family discount store is eyeing a second Fredericton location.
Giant Tiger, which recently opened a store on Union Street and has another location in Oromocto, reportedly has its eye on the Winners location in the Canadian Tire shopping plaza at Smythe and Prospect streets.
Winners is due to relocate to the University of New Brunswick's Corbett Centre retail shopping development on Regent Street.
"Shoppers have warmly welcomed Giant Tiger into the community and we are in discussions for a second location in Fredericton, with the possibility of a spring 2009 opening," said Dave Thorpe, vice-president of marketing with the Ottawa-based Giant Tiger.
"However this is not yet confirmed," Thorpe said.
Giant Tiger has locations in Grand Falls, Moncton and Saint John.
Giant Tiger opened its first store in Ottawa in 1961.
Founded by Gordon Reid, the business has 6,500 employees in 186 stores. While most of the stores operate in Ontario and Quebec, there are five locations in New Brunswick.
The stores retail casual clothing and family footwear, groceries, confectionery, cleaning supplies, housewares, stationary, toys and health and beautify products.
Giant Tiger launched its own trucking operation in 1987 and operates stores under the trade names Giant Tiger, GTXpress, Scott's Discount, and Chez Tante Marie.
