Baladi Fitness official opening set for Nov. 7
Jeanette Pearson of Baladi Fitness, 1201 Mountain Rd., Moncton, thinks her mix of aggressive exercises intermingled with a healthy diet and lively dance is the path to a healthy, well-toned, strong body and peace of mind.
Baladi Fitness is Moncton's newest fitness centre catering mainly to women looking to tone up their bodies rather than just weight loss.
"It's a fresh take on fitness," Jeanette said in a recent interview.
There's more to a healthy lifestyle than counting calories and hours spent in the gym. "Healthy" is making conscious decisions about your body, she said. The goal is to shift away from the aesthetic to body fitness.
It's empowering for women to gain muscle strength as well as flexibility and a well-toned body, she explained.
Jeanette combines exercise with yoga and dancing for fun and inspiration including belly dancing, bollywood, African dance and Latin-inspired high-energy dance mix called zumba.
Yoga helps with breathing, posture, flexibility and sense of well-being.
There is also the "21x12 nutrition challenge" rounding out the fitness training program.
Baladi Fitness will be holding its official opening on Nov. 7 with an open house and free classes for anyone wanting to try out the exercises and program.
"We are committed to making you stronger, faster, fitter and leaner."
The program is suitable for everyone from the athlete to the stay-at-home mom.
Jeanette is a certified personal fitness trainer and group fitness leader. The centre also employs three professional instructors to teach yoga and dance: Lise Bourgeois, Jen Samuel and Tina Wagner.
It is open five days a week with fitness coaching from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily and group classes in the evening including "bellyfit," a fusion of 35 minutes of aerobics combining dancing, yoga and Pilates. There are also running sessions to build stamina and strengthen muscles.
Jeanette said the idea for the centre goes back a few years when she was teaching belly dancing. From there, she fashioned a personal fitness training program incorporating "all the things that work for me."
However, each client is assessed on their own including what they want and need. Maybe it's just yoga or group exercise classes to limber up or perhaps something more ambitious.
The fitness coaching is very aggressive, very intense, she said, but is balanced out somewhat with fun activities such as music and dance.
The response to the program has been really good, she said.
It's teaching them new-found skills. They are able to lift weights, do push-ups and they find it exciting. It's addicting, she said. Women are stronger and able to do more and they appreciate that.
The dancing is also a big draw. Every woman wants to dance. This way, they are exercising as well as learning dance, Jeanette said.
Cost of the program is $125 a month which includes fitness coaching and unlimited group fitness classes. Members are encouraged to keep a training journal and keep track of the exercises they perform.
