Lap of luxury with an ocean view

Cocagne ocean-front cottage development offers an executive vacation option
That high class getaway to a quiet area with beautiful beaches and a view of the ocean, it may be a lot closer than one can imagine.
For the past several years, Coastal Cottage Rental and Sales has been growing and developing an impressive executive cottage retreat experience right here in New Brunswick. And that experience is gaining a reputation around the globe. Based in Cocagne, the property sits nestled in the centre of some of the most scenic coastline found in this region – or anywhere in Canada, for that matter.
“We bought the land in 1999 and it took about two and a half years of land development before we started construction of the cottages,” says Greg Cormier, owner of Coastal Cottage Rental and Sales. “The first cottage was built in 2002 and the property now has 17 houses that we’ve built.”
Stating that he has always had an interest and attraction to waterfront property, Cormier says several factors came together and convinced him that this business is one which would suit him very well.
“There was a lot of studies by ACOA and so on showing that tourists were looking for waterfront establishments,” says Cormier.
“There were very few places like that around here to rent, so when I learned about that and then saw that there was available land I made the decision to go for it.”
While the area does have other ocean view cottages, the units designed for Coastal Cottage Rental and Sales tried a new approach.
“We decided that we wanted to do something special and design something that no one else really offered in this area, which is executive beach homes,” explains manager Kim Turnbull. “There are a lot of older cottages around here but our cottages are very modern and they’re really what executive types are looking for when they’re on vacation.
They range from two to five bedrooms and all have propane fireplaces, some of them have jacuzzi tubs and they’ve all been designed with the sun and the views of the water in mind. One of the things we’re most proud of is how eco-friendly our cottages have been designed to be.”
With more attention being paid to environmental concerns than ever before, Cormier feels that the cottages designed and built for his business have definitely been ahead of the curve.]
“When we started this, the government was just getting together the Shoreline Protection Plan and since then the coastal land policy has also been developed,” says Cormier.
“The way we’ve gone about our development has been challenging because it’s been very non-traditional. With how environmentally conscious we’ve wanted the development to be, it’s meant a lot of work.”
The concern for reducing the impact on the environment has been a driving force for how the cottages have been developed.
“A lot of coastal properties just seem to be a piece of the city that is plunked it next to the water,” says Cormier. “We’ve tried to get away from that and offer a unique experience to people that stay in our cottages.”
In the future, Cormier hopes to see the land utilized in a way that people can appreciate the location and enjoy it without impacting it in a negative fashion.
“We have more land to develop and we want to continue to build more innovative cottages,” he says. “Each time we build we like to push the envelope a little bit more. I think that a lot of the things we did are pretty simple and that all design should have some of these things in mind when it comes to making a difference to your environment.”
