FREDERICTON - After months of talks and increasing public speculation, New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham and Quebec Premier Jean Charest are set to announce details today of a proposed $10 billion deal that would see a majority of the assets of New Brunswick's public utility company sold to Hydro-Quebec.

A New Brunswick government source tells the Canadian Press the premiers will announce a memorandum of understanding that would see New Brunswick get almost $5 billion in cash, and power rate savings of $5 billion.

This week, Premier Graham refused to release details, but did promise there would be time for public debate before a final deal is reached, possibly by next March.

According to sources, Hydro-Quebec would assume almost all assets of NB Power including the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant, leaving the New Brunswick utility with a handful of fossil-fuel plants whose electricity would be sold to the Quebec-run utility.

The premiers of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador are warning the deal would give Hydro-Quebec a monopoly that could hinder other power development in the region and impede power exports to the United States.

How does the sale of NB Power help make NB self sufficient? and to be an energy hub, I would think that energy would be a major ingredient!

Selling NB Power or giving HQ control over our power generation or distribution is ridiculous and does nothing to promote the self sufficiency that Graham has stated as a priority.

If there's $5B in cash, that will go a long way towards making NB self-sufficient, wouldn't it? It could pay off a 1/3 of the public debt! With that amount of $$, could buy the Harbour Bridge and kill the toll, fix the water and sewage in every community in the province.

No clear details about what they are selling for that money, though, or what NB govt is willing to give up. This source says it's not a sale, other reports have suggested it was.

this must never happen . Mabe there is a lot of stuffed white envelopes floating around. Because the Liberal MLA'S will loss their incomes in the next election . We need anther Political Party which could be called NB Alliance Party that represents regular people Irvings own 99% of our provincial newspapers and now they want cheap power (circle K is from Quebec was there a reason for this)

Jon Fritz must be a member of the Graham Cabinet. The Quebec government and power corporation is of course going to want to get the money back that they pay for NB Power. They are not going to recoup it from Quebecers. It is going to come from the people of NB. If residential rates are frozen it will be for a very short period of time, and then they'll be raised. At the same time that the Irvings rates will be substanially lowered. And buddy, $5B is not a lot of money when it comes to governmnet expenditures, the annual budget for the NB government is in the vicinity of $7.2B - so $5B wouldn't even run it for a year. Also, according to Danny Williams, Graham preteneded to work with him and the premiers of NS and PEI on an Atlantic power deal, but all along was negotiating this side deal with Quebec. So not only is he selling out the people of NB he is giving a finger to our Atlantic partners, with whom we have a more natural alliance then with Quebec. Bad move all around.
